I've been trying to decide between the various Easystar-like planes for my next FPV and (hopefully) Arduplane platform.  Could this be the best of both worlds?  Between the Easystar clones of various sizes, the Skywalker types and all the other good options out there, how does one decide?

Thoughts on this plane?  Thoughts on this dilemma?

  • Update:  I don't get to fly much and now have three flights in on my Super Sky Surfer.  I am at altitude at 6,200+ feet starting altitude and get 20 minutes+ on the stock battery.  I estimate 40 minutes+ with the 5000 mamp 3 Cell 25C Lipo with a safety margin.  Mine has been cruising at 25-30 Mph.

    Second FlightMax Altitude: 2066.14 Meters or 6778.68 Feet (524 feet up)
    Max Speed: 20.68 MPS or 40.26 MPH

    Third Flight
    Max Altitude: 2043.98 Meters or 6705.97 Feet (451 feet up)
    Max Speed: 20.58 MPS 46.03 MPH

    I am flying with stock electronics and recommend replacing or strengthening all rear servo rods.  I am new to flying and very much learning.  With that intro here is a video of my last flight where I let the plane fly too far away and lost orientation.  I triggered return to launch which put me in a dive (probably messed up the config after flashing the firmware - my mistake) and landed badly with no damage.  The plane flies great and does not want to come down.  I lumbers into the air but once there is happy to cruise.  Add a little wind and she will stay up forever.

  • anyhow using a cannon sx260 or similar in this thing? I am thinking of adding this to my fixed wing setup for AG IR photo.

  • 3x6000mah 3s Nanos (Turnigy) in parallel so 18amps total. Don't know "cruising" draw cause I'm not doing that much.. but with the amp meter, on the ground static I'd like to say around 11a.

    I remember people saying they are seeing 5-8amps in flight at 40-55mph.

    What size battery pack are you using? Do you know the cruising current draw?

  • My SSS is now flying, 1hr+ flights are easy but mine has been heavily modified, CF'd all up, etc. I pulled apart both sides of the fuse's and internally braced them with CF rod and mat then cut out holes and sections in the middle and back for the telemetry and video.. from the 3/4 on out of the wings are CF'd on the bottom to prevent flexing.. I can keep up with sport planes pulling high G's and the wings don't flex much at all.

    Rear stab got the same treatment.. no solid glass spar here, all CF hollow rod.

    All in all she flies AWESOME! I'm running Airtronics FHSS-3 on it but I no longer have the APM 2.5.. too glitchy.. waiting for PX4 to mature or OpenPilot in a few months..

    But I can fly for 1hr 10min and come down with 3.90v on the pack! :)

    Hi Joseph, Jason and Scott and co. I'm interested if you've got your Super Skysurfers going, and what you think. What kind of cruising power/speeds/endurance are you getting? 

  • I used the bixler PID settings as a starter on mine. Worked great. Mine had a terrible crash do to a mechanical malfunction that banana hobby has reviewed and offered to replace. This all happened back in September on the 2ns flight. I would reccommend moving the servos to the tail. They use very soft push rods in it and my elevator push rod bent at the servo and caused an uncontrolled dive into the ground. But like I said bananna hobby has owned up to the issue and is replacing the plane for me. Very impressed. Of course it took them 8 months to do this but better late then never. I still plane on reinstalling my APM 1.4 in it and I will also relocate the servos to the tail with short stiff linkage.
    I will post a build when it arrives.
  • Same question here.... Bixler PIDs?

    Lots of discussion on this air frame in RC Groups with some great feedback on props, ESCs, CG, etc.  Almost ready for the maiden and would love to learn from the more experienced here as this is my first APM 2.5 setup.

     

  • I'm wondering the same. I have mine all ready to go with 3x 3s-6000mah Nano's (yup, 18amps).. and a 2.5.

    It's been all lightened up and CF'd up for strength but I'm wondering which PID or settings to use? Next week is 1st flight (in manual) but would like to setup a RTH just in case the FPV wacks out.

  • Is everyone using the Bixler PIDs on this airframe?
