Now that Tony Cairoli can fully enjoy about the newly conquered eighth world title in Motocross, Red Bull can reveal some details that have contributed to the success. Here's one: about a year ago, the team of the hugely popular energy drink has involved our Team to create a telemetry system (baptized then Connected Rider and proved an excellent device, almost to Formula One) for use during workouts Tony , to track its performance and uncover the secrets of his guide so unique riding his KTM 350 SX-F.
This is an example of tool used during the data analysis and algorithm implementation and  debug support the video sincronization with raw data from the telemetry device:)

  • There have been two products like this in the past, both worked well, but failed to sell. I use a older APM 2.5 on my son's bike, more to get suspension feed back then anything. He only rides regional events (MMRS), and not experienced enough to tell me how well the bike is working, but the APM tells me all :)

    Logging the accel / angles values on jumps, is very useful currently, but TBH, a good rider can tell you much more.

    @Harry ,

    sure with a good benchmark the device could be very userfull for improving rider performances.

    No the device is mounted on Moto not on rider . The main reason is because only on moto there are all information that we need about the raider performances :)

    We use acc only in some specific condition ..  mainly gyro , baro and gps.

    About commercial product don't have info .

  • @Roberto, do you see your system being useful to other riders in improving performance?

  • Ah, I see, I was wondering about the vibration.  I assumed maybe you mounted the system on the rider himself, then the vibration should be pretty low.

    So how do you measure G's with accelerometers?  Just using GPS data?

    Is this product going to be for sale?

  • Original post in italian language, Thanks Roberto

    Hi Rob,

    it's a custom project develop by scratch for this kind of application . A standard AHRS isn't good because the quantity of vibration was incredible . Basically we used gyro .... and a special code more similar to VR Gimbal stabilization ...

    During this great experience start project as micro brain , new telemetry and new multiconstellation GPS , to try to overcame the precedent technology.  Great work doing on reliability of the system , miniaturization , link range in extreme condition.

    @Harry,

    Tony is the benchmark !!! It's 8 times motorcross worldchampion . When he run a race the other raider don't exist :) During the test i see how he drive his KTM , He is the best !!! :)

  • Roberto, are you saying you used VRBrain and some version of our AHRS to get datalogs on the bike?

    If so, that's very cool.  A couple years ago I tried to get some of my friends to try using an APM for data logging on their race cars, but they weren't interested.

  • Interesting, as a way to master a particular course?  I suppose you could tell a rider something like, it's better to go off two whoopdees than three before that turn, or if youre on the outside, go for three.  They don't always have the best line available, but if they know more about what's fastest that can only be good.
