This is main board normally put on Gimbal frame near the Quad .

This is the two options imu available normally is on camera module: 

2 axis with 3 accelerometer and 3 gyroscope 3 magnetometer in one version we use mpu6050 and in other we use mpu 9150 1 chip 9 DOF sensor.

Some friends start to design different kind of gimbal for our new board. The main difference respect of standard gimbal is that the mechanical frame need to be develop for each video sensor that you would like to use for your video. This frame is for Gopro Hero 2-3 in the design is important to move CG of camera for obtain better result during gimbal stabilization :)

 

This is the caratheristics of our : VR Gimbal :

Micro Controller is STM32F1 at 72 mhz.

3 Axis Brushless Direct Drive gimbal :

  • Roll    (MOT1)
  • Pitch  (MOT2)
  • Yaw    (MOT3)

For each channel we have 3 high power pwm output .

 

I2C IMU that support 3 axis . It  is on camera module , so we can know exactly the position of camera and control in realtime the 3 Brushless motors.

We are developing two option :

  • more traditional approach : MPU6050 (6 DOF) + HMC5883 (3 DOF)
  • new sensor from inversense MPU 9150 (9 DOF)

 

1 USB port.

1 Serial port that support mavlink protocol.

1 Power module that support until 3S battery.

4 Radio RC Input for :

  • Control ROLL Setup.
  • Control Pitch Setup.
  • Control YAW Setup.
  • IR control repeater.

4 Analog Input 0-3.3v

1 IR Out , so is pssible to control a remote camera by its ir receiver.

 

The first batch of production will be available in 3 week it's better to reserve your board because there is a big request of this gimbal.

  • @Para, I did use that kind of slip rings in the past for an other project, and there is notting wrong with them, they are really good. Despite to what someone says, If you stay below a certain limit of RPM (in my case 50) you can transmit serial+power+usb without any noise.

    I will definitely prefer the solution with slip rings instead of adding an other Rc receiver onboard, or wireless connection.

  • @Olivier, a true 3-axis gimbal can use one of these for communication:

    My 2-axis AlexMos gimbal with 5010s and a Sony CX-740 Handycam tops at 1.2A on 4S, but for safety one can go 2xVCC, 2xGND, RX, TX on the 6 wires.

  • Flight head filmotechnic has a special rotary connection in every axis to avoid friction fom wires between the frame nd gimbal axis. I have to say when you use this kind of device all the mass in the game are very big, think to the panavision camera with a zoom lens and his volume and his weight... Probably the IMU sensor has the same size of this little gimbal or Zenmuse gimbal but the wire effect is very different. Sorry for my poor english...

    Roberto, would be nice to have a RC mode input, so that we can choose between different modes :

    - freewheeling (for gimbal balancing for example)

    - 2 axis stabilisation

    - 3 axis stabilisation

    It is important to be able to switch to 2 axis stabilisation when there is a single pilot.

    A 5V output could be nice so that we can connect a 3DR radio module for linking with the main APM (GPS coordinates transfert for centripetal corrections and target lock data).

    As you know on a true 3 axis gimbal you cannot use wires between the frame and the gimbal axis.

  • Hi, my name is Giovanni Gebbia from Turin Italy. I'm sorry for my poor english. I'm working in film and television industry as steadicam and camera operator since 30 years. I'm very intrested to any system able to stabilize any movie camera. I'm not expert with controller brushless motor and radio control but I want to learn, so I offer to all of you all my knowledge and my experience as a camera operator to help in any way. I really want to buy a 3 axis controller and off course 3 brushless motor. I have a little milling machine and I think that I can try myself to make the gimbal. I understand how much is important the perfect balance in any axis of the camera in the gimbal... I balance any camera on my steadicam since 1988. From Nab show 2013 Freefly Movi system makes a big boom in the market, and the device is very impressive. But I think Movi is far to become a very usefull instrument in the film industry without some changes...that's my opinion... Are you agree with me?

    Very nice Roberto, would be important to get GPS Data from the main APM so that you can compute centripetal force correction to avoid bad horizon during fast turns.

    I would suggest to add a 3DR radio receiver on the gimbal so that you can get GPS and target lock data through Mavlink without wires. This is important for a 3 axis setup.
