Better landing gear/legs

Hello Everyone,

I am looking for a good material to make landing legs out of since the ones that come with the Quad kit from 3D are expensive and rather weak.  Also they ae not long enough for me to put my camera rig under my Quad.  I have tried plexiglass but they seem to brake even faster than the originals.

  • Like everybody i am learning and smashing my carbon fibre legs. I tried a few other ideas but they all failed. I am however happy with my last attempt. Its cheap, easy to make, handles bounces and is not ruined by nasty unexpected drops.

Basically i am using some long foam with steel wire threaded though the center from the base, thru the screw holds on the arms and then back down the center. Both ends of the wire are then folded across the end of the foam to hold it in place. My hex looks like an oil platform with concrete legs, except mine are foam.

My legs are about 20cm in length and made of EVA form which i purchased from Clarkrubber, a foam, rubber, pool supply shop.

The foam is relatively shock resistant and bounces back into shape after a crash. The steel wire does bend on a rough crash but its easy to bend it back into shape. Bounces and soft landings work well. I dont think the weight is a much to worry about. I also thought that my reasonably long legs might be a problem for the sonar, but my test flights fly just beautifully and this is not an issue.

My foam legs hold the hex quite well.

Belly view. I placed some other foam between the arms and the top of the foam to fill the gaps.

  • Look at the landing gear in the video in this thread.

  • I also add some tape around the base to stop the screws and spacers when they separate or pop. This of course doesnt solve the legs breaking problem but at the least you dont lose the screws and spacers.

I tried gluing some carbon fibre rods to "join" a broken leg but while it normally holds it seems to separate on a heavy landing and doesnt really hold the leg together. Im not sure if this is a good or bad thing.

  • I made these from Garolite G10 from McMaster.com

And then got some black Garolite G10/FR4 from there and made these, similar to the size of the 3DR ones.

  • I recently got the hex kit with spares and the camera gimbal kit.

The orig legs are of course too short and the gimbal assembly hits the ground. I was wondering has anyone with "spares" tried attaching them to the orig legs making the entire "leg" now twice as long ? Is this a good idea ?

  • I made mine out of carbon fiber hobby king airplane landing gears and some motor mount parts. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=...

  • I made my 3DR styled legs from recycled circuit boards. HERE is a blog post about it.

If you have access to a CNC unit, I could share my gcode for the 3DR work-alikes. You wouldn't want to try to cut circuit board or even regular fiberglass laminate without one.

  • Probably too late to help you, but for future searchers:

udrones sells a longer version of the legs, and also have a camera gimbal with their rtf kit but don't seem to list the gimbal as a separate product.

  • Check out this link.  Their sheets are the next best thing to carbon fabric weaves.  Thinnest sheet though is around 2.5mm thick.  However, its strong and cuts/drills more easily than fabric weaves, but best of all its cheap.  P/N 48211 should be a big enough piece for you to cut quite a few legs out of it.
