Compass not responding

I am testing a new arducopter with 2.1 firmware and the compass is not working properly in the APM Mission Planner 1.0.64 program. With it enabled in the terminal it shows heading 0, x,y,z also zeros while in Log/Setup mode. I did crash and bend a few pins on the I2c port, but with an oscilloscope I can see the proper 100khz SCL clock and SDA data signals between the Atmega and compass, so I can't figure out why it isn't receiving the data. I am a computer programmer, so perhaps I could write a simple program to send and receive some sample data to the ports to see if the Atmega could have a blown port pin. Any ideas what else I could test?
