DIY build for long flight

I've been playing around with an out of the box quad for photos and mapping.  Unfortunately the flight times are fairly limited.  I'm looking to build an autonomous fixed wing or flying wing that can tote a point a shoot camera that can cover alot more ground than the quad.

Does anyone have any recommendations on frames or experience building a long flying UAV?  I've heard reports of some out of the box models that can stay in the air around an hour but I dont have 15 to 25k to drop on a UAV.

  • If you have 10k, then look at these guys.  They have put a lot of time into the bells and whistles and getting everything working well together.  The platform they use works great if you want to build one up yourself too.

    • Those out of the box systems look great but unfortunately I dont have 10k to drop on a drone at the moment.  I've heard of people having great success with custom rigs outfitted with nav systems.  I'm been eyeballing the skywalker fixed wing with a pixhawk setup.  I know 3DR has a turnkey package called the aero and aero M but I would have a hard time spending that kind of cash without trying to do it myself first.

      • Check out the Volantex Ranger EX airplane, I own one and I have seen videos on Youtube of people flying it for over 60 minutes.
