Does APM 2.5 need the APM power module to measure battery remaining?

I'm trying to read the battery percent remaining from messages from the APM 2.5 but the value is always -1. Does APM 2.5 have the ability to measure battery voltage on its own or is the power module required?

I believe you need a power module. I normally fly with a small LiPo buzzer alarm module plugged into my battery balance plug. If I forget my buzzer alarm module I fly only 10 minutes per battery charge. My Spektrum DX8 has a timer that I can set to 25% or more of my throttle. Whenever my throttle is above 25% the timer counts.
