I’m looking at putting together a rig to use for aerial photography, specifically using a Canon 6D. I have experience with cameras but zero with drones, so the flying bit has me lost a bit! I’ve looked at a lot of UAVs, gimbals, controllers etc but still not entirely sure of the complete list of things I need – and whether they should be purchased as a package or independently. I (as I imagine most people) would like to keep the cost down for my first setup – but by the same token don’t want to crash one of my cameras. Can someone help with a list of what I need + suggestions of where to get it? I’m in Australia. The camera weighs 1.075kg with a prime lens, 1.28kg with a zoom.
I don’t mind some building but not much experience in electronics past the old Radio Shack “beer powered radio” kit type thing :) I imagine it might also be a good idea to buy a cheapish drone to practice the basic flying part before risking crashing the main one. Not entirely sure about the flying licence requirements here, I wouldn’t have clients as such but may sell some photos. I realise there are a lot of options out there but thought maybe some people here would have some tips to get me started, as its all new to me! Thanks!

Thanks for the info. I should probably get some practice on the smaller one first anyway! Speaking of which...any tips on buying one of these?
Thanks guys, I really appreciate the time people take to give such detailed info. I can see the problem with the quite big camera greatly increasing the size / complexity / price of the drone – the problem is I don’t really see much alternative apart from something like a very expense / small Sony full frame camera (but even still not really my camera of choice) I need a good camera for my shots – similar to what I would use for a landscape photo printed really big. In a perfect world Canon 1d but not with my budget! If I could get it in around 4000 as OG suggests it would be great, if I can manage to build it myself. Does over 2kg make it commercial or something James?
You should definitely get some practices with a cheep copter. A pro rig is expensive. You will need a brushless gimbal capable of carrying 6D. You need a copter frame that will support the gimbal , gimbal mount and handle power plant 8 motors, ESC & props combo. Then you need to figure out flight controller and other acsesorys like HDM to AV converter, FPV monitor , Battery's , FPV TxRx, & RC TxRx. Should cost you around 4000 if you build your self fast sevise to AU.
