Is there any way to "force" it by entering it manually, with a checkmark for "always", making sure no external factor would reset it, like a battery disconnection ?
That would allow for some specific missions to double-up the distance range.

There was some talk a while back of being able to set the home position differently from the startup or when clicking "home position" like when you're at a flying field and need the home position set to one side of the flight line, I can't find it now but will have another look.
There's also a DO_SET_HOME command that can be placed in a mission.
check out "rally point" feature.
Didn't I see once a request in GIT for a mission step that could set-home ? - to have an alternative landing spot in case of trouble ?
