Hi to all, im a little new to UAV, but little old to GIS and maping and I was wondering if we could use georefernced images in mission planner, instead of google earth,
there ara two main reasons :
1. usualy an unmaped area dosent have a wifi hotspot.. or good 3g coverege so there goes my crystal clear backround,
2. we often se mistakes in google earth beetwen 1 to 7 m.
i saw that feyu tech has something like that... but since AMP is open source...

So, as for the first part (good backround on the field) we have many solutions.
As for the georeferenced images, i should mention that: OZI map files have a catch, they use only first order polyonimal to georefernce a map or image- 3 point correction, (usually, we need 2nd-3rd or even spline), also OZI dosent support pyramids so its difficult to load high quality aerophotos. Thats why ArcGIS,ERDAS,QUANTUM etc, use the image file ***.jpg, the georeference file ***. jgw & ***.jpg.aux.xml & pyrammid file ***.rrd.
As for the datum, everything must be projected to WGS84 datum (GE and GPS receivers) Global mapper for example does that seamlessly, when we download USGS satellite images (utm) converts them to WGS 84, also in to take foul advantage of the pre fetch tool of APM or G.MAPPER tile you have to own a pro GE licence for the 0,20 m pixel accuracy.

Yes WMS are very popular and most countries have their own high quality orthophoto wms service, but still we need internet conection on the field to use them.
The GE Cashed version is always in medium quality and with a lots of error (im from Greece, usual errors exced 15 meters).
So what about already georeferenced Tiffs, imgs etc.... like topografik maps, aerial images with below 0,2 m pixel!! without the need of internet conection? theres alot of opensource GIS servises like POSTGIS, i assume programming geniuses here can find a way to combine them...
I just recieved mine APM, so i will try to find a possible way, like: overlay a high quality wms servise in my GE, level up the cashe size at home, then go out...
