Help with drone part (AutoPilot)

Hi
I want to make a quadcopter that can fly on autopilot by it self and then detect an "X" sign on the ground using a camera detection and land on that sign.
What I am asking is do I need a GPS for the drone since I want it on autopilot ?
The drone function is only to detect and land on the sign and this is in a known area [playground].
Note that I am using arduino to make the flight controller.
