My Hair-brain Scheme

Greetings all!

The idea of creating a civilian UAV is not new to me (it's been floating around in my head for about 6 years now). I am however very surprised and pleased to find out how inexpensive it actually is. I thought the technology to actually do this was out of the hands of normal folks.Imagine my surprise to see a bunch of folks out there doing exactly what I have thought about for years.

So my hair-brain idea runs kinda like this.

I want to use this: http://www.nitroplanes.com/demotw2573en.html as my platform.

I guess my idea is more of a ROV than a true drone. I envision the aircraft being piloted from a ground station with all the necessary telemetry and a forward facing ccd camera being transmitted real time to the pilot.

The aircraft also has a pan tilt camera installed and being controlled by a separate operator. From there it could be hooked up to a DVR or whatever for recording. My thinking is that the pilot has their hands full flying the aircraft, and the surveillance operator can devote their time to scanning the area for whatever they are looking for.

Please feel free to shoot holes in this.

Am I way off track, or is this the right place for me?

  • This is the right place for you Bud.  I think you should use a cheaper aircraft or just build one your self .  The Sky Walker would be a better platform to start with.  It's big, flys great and can carry the weight of all the electronics.  The sky walker also has lots of interior room inside for mounting your hardware.
