New 3DR Holiday Kit - Complete?

Hi All,

This kit says "Each kit provides everything you need to build a powerful copter for fully autonomous flights."  However, it looks like it's missing at least the battery.

I'm very new to UAVs.  Would it be possible for someone with more experience to tell us what else needs to be purchased to make this kit complete?

Thank you!

J

    J,

The standard 3DR RTF kits are for people who already have basic RC gear, such as batteries and chargers. But if you're new to this field and want something 100% complete and fully ready to go out of the box, the IRIS is the better choice. It's got all necessary radios, battery and charger and is already set up ready to go.

  • Good point, for a true beginner this is a bit misleading.

You do also need a battery AND a 6+ channel 1.4 Ghz RC transmitter and receiver.

In fact, the 3DR radio is for telemetry and could be skipped and you could easily find a suitable 6 to 9 channel RC radio transmitter and receiver and probably even the battery for the $99.00 of the telemetry radio.

Of course then you wouldn't get the $50.00 off for the holiday deal, so if you order by Jan 2nd, definitely a better deal to get the whole thing.

They don't actually cut you a deal to buy the 3DR radio in the kit so you could add it at any time without taking a loss.

The Iris which includes a Pixhawk (and costs more) is actually available RTF with everything you need.

You might want to take a look at this Wiki page to get a better feel for your options: http://copter.ardupilot.com/wiki/build-your-own-multicopter/

If you can't afford an Iris, the Flamewheel build has a lot to offer: http://copter.ardupilot.com/wiki/build-your-own-multicopter/#Almost...
