Newbie alert!

Hi all, like to introduce myself,Mike Perkins from darkest S.Wales.

As in the title I'm a sopping wet behind the ears, green as grass newbie.Got interested in Qcopters through my photography hobby, would like to try some aerial stuff.

I got an Xaircraft 650 value frame from Quadcopters UK, an Ardupilot Mega 2560, 850Kv motors & ESC's

and other gubbins from Martin @ Build Your Own Drone. R/C is Spektrum DX8.

I had oodles of help from Martin at BYOD during assembly (that man has some patience) now comes the really trying phase. I've lost count of the number of times I've calibrated the ESC's both auto and manual, levelled, calibrated radio etc through CLI meticulously.Motors are all turning in correct direction, props are all correctly fitted and right way up.All motors start in sync???

I've read large tracts of the forum relating to my problem, which is that the quad insists on flipping either forward or sideways as I slowly increase the power upwards.

I don't know if this has any relevance :-

In CLI> setup>motors when Lipo is connected, the motors run in short bursts in clockwise sequence. Motors 2,3,& 1 have approx a 3 second interval after they run before the next motor starts in the sequence.I don't know if this is a problem but after motor 4 stops there is around 7 seconds before motor 2 runs?

Does this output seem correct?

CLI>setup>level output is =
Init Gyro**Init Accel********** A_off: -0.14, 0.60,-0.98 IMU
----------------------------------------------------------------------
G_off: -0.06, 0.15, -0.16
A_off: -0.14, 0.60, -0.98

I've been trying this on a tiled floor so the quad can slide along a little before lifting so's the undercarriage doesn't snag on anything. I've not touched the PID settings in any way (terrified).

Using the latest v2.5.4 code, latest Mission Planner software, any and all suggestions welcome (provided they aren't too outrageous and/or illegal) I can only rely on you Gurus to point me to the correct bearing now.
