newbie need help with APM 2.6 sudden lift-off

hello thank you I'm a newbie to this I've played with a couple of cheap quadcopters.,,,,,, I have an apm2.6 on an F 450 frame and after finally getting it in the air it was flying pretty good on two separate occasions, it was hovering nicely and then all of a sudden just took straight up in the air. I tried lowering the throttle even putting it at minimum and it wouldn't do anything until it decided to come down on its own I was in stabilized mode. and really scared me I got already 600 bucks invested in it. if there is any help I would much appreciate it thank you

  • Try flying 3.1.5 firmware. Apparently 3.2.1 one needs to be reworked.

  • yes it was in stabilize mode I had them all set the same to make sure. As far as mounting medium I'm using Velcro. .

the very first time it did it, it was hovering nicely in the backyard then I brought it out front cuz I had a lil more room.

the second time I was on my third battery before it did it.

one thing I've been wondering and haven't checked yet and now I've got my new props in I can check I'm wondering

about the failsafe like return to launch has a predetermined altitude I believe 50 or 60 meters when its activated,

it flies to that altitude then goes back to the launch location,

what I'm wondering is since I'm just hovering over the same area in the middle of the street that's why it took off straight

up and then came down because it was only a 30 or 40 foot section I was flying around just to test it. so technically it did return to launch. going to try to get some time this weekend to overlook it it may be set on battery low or something like that

  • Hi Steve,

That is definitely not an acceptable situation.

In stabilize mode, it definitely shouldn't do that, so something is seriously wrong.

Is it possible that you aren't actually in stabilize mode, but possibly altitude hold?

For your first flights it is wise to simply set all of the mode switches to stabilize, sometimes switches can be reversed from what you think or may not work like you think.

There may be something wrong with your baro/altimeter.

Is this a 3DR APM or another manufacturer?

Many of the non-3DR APMs have issues and the DIYDrones developers are really not much interested in dealing with them, because it is much easier to only support the ones you use yourself.

    Finally and possibly most importantly:

I fly a F450 and an F330 real DJI Flamewheel and one thing you definitely need is vibration isolation for the APM/PX4/Pixhawk.

And excess vibration can definitely cause the sort of problem you are seeing.

Please look at my page about the two Flamewheels build on my Quadcopters Are Fun Web site.

I wrote the original page on the DIYDrones APMCopter site, but am no longer maintaining it.

Kyosho Zeal Gel or equivalent, double sided antivibration foam tape or O ring suspension mounting can provide sufficient vibration isolation, but you definitely need something adequate.

    Best regards,

    Gary

    • as far as being a 3dr I'm not 100 percent sure I know the compass and GPS module does say that but the board itself I'm not sure I did buy them as a set.

  • 3D Robotics

Are you mounting your APM on vibration-damping foam? It's won't work otherwise...
