NASA opensourced their flight design tool a while ago.

Has anyone used it? Is it worth learning how to use?

I just starting using it on one of my new projects, and it looks promising.

It does what it says, "...allows the user to create a 3D model of an aircraft defined by common engineering parameters. This model can be processed into formats suitable for engineering analysis."

What I do like about it, is it is not as CPU intensive as I expected.  For a test run, I gave it my prototype fat boy design and it told me what I already knew spot on.   Its hard to predict what a plane with two weed eater motors will do...

Thanks for the report!

It's a pretty cool tool!  Well worth trying out.  Maybe some members here can start making x-plane/flightgear models of their airframes with it.  Hopefully someone can come up with a tutorial.  With all the export options there must be quite a few ways to use it.

Ill make a tutorial sooner or later, but I still prefer Auto desk Inventor 2013 (yarr) when it comes to making models and doing stress tests

Well, I hope the $3k software package is better than the free one, otherwise they have a major problem in their business model!

By tutorial I just meant a simple explanation of how to convert your files to a finished model for use in a flight sim.  Have you done this and compared the flight model to actual flying?

OpenVSP supports importing STL, NASCART, Xsec to mesh, and Xsec to surf.

Me personally, I use OpenVSP for inspiration and for testing basic setups.   Will post screen shot of what im working on soon.
