Spinning on its own

I have built my own Hexacopter and I am using an APM 2.6.

I had a test flight today and all seemed fine apart from the fact that the hexacopter would not stop spinning.

Does anyone know of any reason as to why this would happen?

I have checked all the motors and they are all spinning the right direction, all the correct propellers are on the right motors, I just dont understand why it is spinning, please help.

I am also using the spektrum DX7s if that helps.

  • Does the spinning velocity increase when you increase or decrease throttle?

If one motor/prop combo (or more?) are slightly out of the vertical, they can generate a momentum around your CG (mid-axis of the vehicle), causing the entire combination to start spinning.

What you can do to verify is to use a ruler to measure the distance from each prop to a flat surface. If on the left prop tip vs. the right prop tip ou see a difference of about 0.5mm or more, the momentum it generates is significant. In that case, you can use spacers (under motor?  a piece of paper is usually enough!) to calibrate this.

Another thing that you can do is turn on the "motors output" in the ardupilot logs. Then you can see whether the output to the motor is balanced or not, which is an indicator of such issues, which as a symptom cause this spinning behavior.

    • also, if there's an inbalance in any way, you can definitely tell by having more yaw authority over one side versus the other (in flight).
