Starting a mission

This is probably a very stupid question, but here it goes:

How do I start a mission in mission planner? Do I need to arm the copter myself? Do I need to set the drone to auto mode for the mission to start?

All the guides explain how to plan the mission, but nothing on how actually start one.

Many thanks,

  • I normally take off manually [stabalize mode], Switch to alt-hold, then when ready I flip over to auto and let the thing do its thing. When it comes in to land I drop throttle to 0 and let it land and disarm.

    • Hi Craig,

Many thanks for your reply. Have you ever started a mission by setting the first WP as takeoff? Wouldn't RTL do the trick by landing the copter?

I had a very unpleasant experience with my drone the last time I tried to fly a mission; the drone just disappeared in the horizon flying very fast, switched to RTL but never came back. I found it half an hour later crashed within a woodland. Good thing it crashed there, and not over a house or someone. It's a big drone, so I don't want to mess about with it.

      • I have not as I prefer to be in control :) I always set my last waypoint as RTL. sorry to hear about your incident but at least you got it back, I've never been that lucky.

but yes you can set your 1st command to take off but I just don't trust it enough. I've run dozens and dozens of missions and never have had a mishap so I tend to stick with what I know works :)
