To Tri or Not to Tri...?

I'm contemplating a rotor based craft of some type and I'm thinking Tricopter.

Wondering a few things:

As far as basic PID settings, are there specific measurements (radius, weight) I should try for that works best with default Arducopter tri code? If not, it's no big deal, but if extending my arms an extra inch saves me hours of frustration, I may as well plan on it from the start.

Materials: I want it to be as DIY as it can be. Mainly because the worst part of any crash is not having spare parts available and having to wait... I can get 1/2"x36 balsa for less than 2$ a piece locally. Is there a big advantage to using balsa over pine or anything else? I find pine trim from reno stores always tends to have a bit of a twist.

I have an FPV manuals tri. They recommend 10mm bass wood. I got some and it's superior to balsa.

The config should be somewhat symmetrical, otherwise your fine.
