tricopter control

Hi, I'm very new to all of this, so please forgive me if I say something that doesn't make any sense. I was given several home-made drones along with another purchase, and I'm trying to learn more about them.

I've gotten one of the drones, a tricopter, to respond to throttle and rudder input so that it can hover and turn. But once its hovering, It seems to have no response to any other input from the right stick on the controller (forward, backward, side-to-side). So I'm wanting to know if this is actually a problem or if I'm just trying to control it wrong? I think its using a kk2.0 flight controller. When I go into the receiver test on the flight board It shows input from the right stick and I'm fairly certain I connected the motors in the right order...
