Running A Script

I am writing a script or Mission to run on my APM. My question is, does the script save in the memory of the board so it can be run without a groundstation?

New To Mavlink

I am looking to go a bit deeper with Mavlink and write and run a script. Where do I start? I would need to do things like fetch the coordinates then run an equation to determine a new heading.
