NPR piece on DIY Drones

3689394415?profile=original

Last month Chris and I were interviewed by Carrie Kahn from NPR West regarding drone use.

The report is unfortunately a bit of an anti climax (see link). I really tried very hard to present our community as progressive, safety aware innovators and the main theme of the piece is more concerned with privacy issues.

For the record there are a number of inaccuracies in the piece   i.e. I did not build the sUAS in question in 2005 and at no point did I intend to sell sUAS. I did start playing with the technology starting back in 2005. I do intend to offer aerial imaging for agriculture if and when the FAA provides rules I can operate under.

Commercial Use by 2015?

3689390447?profile=original

Well we have been waiting for some movement for the past few years and there may be some developments...

There is legislation working through the House of Representatives which as reported by sUAS News allow for commercial UAV /sUAS use of the NAS by 2015. Within this legislation there is however a section (323) which if it remains in the language would require that the FAA to determine if "certain" UAV/sUAS systems could be used in the NAS without having to receive a COA etc. They would it appear require some form of policy / certification / pilot training.

There are no guarantees that this legislation will be adopted without changes or if it will make it into law however it could allow the FAA to establish a more progressive policy to small sUAS in a very short time frame. So let's all remain positive that cool heads and pragmatic thinking will hold the day (I am more positive than I was when I woke up this morning, thanks Gary Mortimer).

Some Tracks and Video

Flight 070409, Duration 15 minutes, winds gusting South to NorthBelow is a track in Google Earth of a recent flight....doing some modification testing on the airframe and some tweaking of the autopilot. Flight was "slightly" above AMA guidelines but as I had the field to myself for the afternoon I took the liberty.

Here is a video of the flight. The footage is boring so I sped it up.(about 45mb)...BigBird_At_CIC.wmvHere is a montage of the field. Due to gusting winds it does not match up well. I am waiting for a calm morning to take some good shots.

Small UAS...trials and tribulations....

26080909:00, No wind, conditions clear.Test flight of CC using the FMA COP4.Near perfect conditions to test the mods to the CC along with the addition of the FMA Copilot.System was prepped and loaded the night before and assembly and calibration went smoothly. I did not have camera installed due to leaving the screws at home. Take off was to the south with a left hand climb out on full auto.Interrupted flight during grid to run an orbit. Resumed track and then moved waypoint so CC would follow. Hit a coms snag and took manual control for landing. Found I had the elevator reversed corrected on the spot. Landing was fast but level. No damage.

I cam across this information while doing some research today. I thought that this was a very interesting application of small UAS technology. I do not believe that it would be currently viable with the very technical nature of the systems and the skill set required to operate them but still a very interesting concept.http://www.nhls.ac.za/about_news.html
