According to this RCGroups post:

The WKM upgrade now has a no fly zone built into it 15km around Tienanmen Square . I love the idea of being able to impose your own no fly zones through software, for safety reasons, airports etc. I not not think it right that govts can now make manufacturers hard wire in no flyzones in tho the core software. One of the most important future use of this technology is for journalists to cover stories govts don't want them to cover. SO will the Turkish govt now request no fly zones around taskim square

UPDATE: This is confirmed. Here is DJI's official release note. Thanks to BlueSky1 for the link

Is there any evidence for this other than flyingbicuit1's story?  Somebody might be pulling your leg.

In other news, flyingbuscuit1 reported flying his DJI from Beijing to Turkey.

  • Tienanmen Square in general is a no fly zone?   Seems like a bunch of additional checks the software is doing that it doesn't need to do... so what happens when you get near the square?

This is pretty much the same as scanners refusing to scan money. As long as we are talking about restricted airspace I'm kinda ok with it. But give a finger and they take the arm and all that..

There are other products that do that...

  • That's why we like open source software!
