24353.jpgToday Hobbyking added a stabilisation control board for fixed wing aircraft to their catalogue. This board supports conventional, flying wings (delta) and v-tail aircraft, easily selectable by on-board jumper. Unfortunately for v-tail aircraft an y-cable is needed if you are using 2 servo's.

The board is controlled by an Atmel Mega168PA 8-Bit RISC based micro controller and utilizing a single high precision 3-axis MEMS gyro and independent gyro gain adjustment for tuning aileron, elevator and rudder.

Not includeded are servo leads to connect your receiver to the i86AP Flight Stabilisation control board. You will need 3 of them, don't forget to include in your order.

I had a quick glance at the manual (which can be downloaded here) and it seems that it provides good information how to use this board.

Specifications:
Input Voltage: 4v to 6v DC
PWM Output: 50Hz, 1020-2020us
Gyro scale: +/- 1000dps
Gyro sample rate: 1KHz
Operating temp: -40° C to 85° C
Size: 30mm x 40mm
Weight: 8g

  • Kind of Freaky!  since it has been25 years since I was into Rc they were just putting  "Expensive "Gyros into Rc Helicopters and it took a good hand to fly one. I came across auto stabilization by accident in my real flight flight simulator  I would bank the plane it would straighten itself out I thought there was something wrong with the plane ? For a "Newbie"  it might be a good thing to have depending on where you are in the perpetual " Build ,Fly, Crash "  Cycle at least you will be going in level.

  • The new KK board supports fixed wing craft right out of the box and has accelerometers for autolevel. You can also assign a radio channel to turn it on or off.

  • My question is why?  The KKboard HK already has, can control planes with the Minsoo firmware, which is probably what this is anyways.

I have a few go fasts that I wouldn't mind having a little assistance with...  Too bad it's backordered...

  • Wow this is a good price, as i have a few foamies that i was waiting to put the EagleTree system in http://www.eagletreesystems.com/Guardian/index.htm, this is a cheaper alternative you can play with. As Mark had said above this can be used like the AS3X in micro planes, which opens up even more models to fly :-)

  • Someone presenting himself as 'OpenAero' has posted on the product page that he is going to look into modifiying code for this stabiliser.

Some others say that they see similarities between this stabiliser and the Eagle A3. Looking at the pictures, they might be correct

If you are willing to pay a little more, the Eagle A3 and Eagle A3 Pro are very good. 3-axis rate or head-hold stabilization for 3D maneuvers, more stable flight in wind gusts etc. But like the HK board they are gyro only, so no auto leveling.

It seems this is like the AS3X from e-flite.  It won't auto-level your plane, but it will help compensate for wind, etc.

By all accounts it (a) makes flying planes possible/pleasurable in higher winds than normal and (b) makes it easier to fly 3D since the gyros will do things like assist in harrier balancing.

I wonder why that did'nt just go straight into a receiver. Has to happen soon....
