3689395231?profile=originalSweden's national TV channel SVT aired an episode this week of it's kid's show "Mekatronik" (Swedish for mechatronics) where a Blimpduino kit was used to demonstrate ballooning.

The complete episode is available here: http://svtplay.se/v/2358074/mekatronik/del_6_av_12__solballong
Unfortunately you have to be within Sweden to see the show online (I guess). Also it's in Swedish. :)

I know it will never work because of the weight, but imagine Blimp + Kinetic. Let it loose and watch as it slowly glides along, mapping the room.

What we'd like to do with BlimpDuino 2.0 is implement a proper SLAM solution. The IR detectors and ground-beacon are fun and a good demonstration of aerial robotics, but the blimp can't really do anything useful--it just orbits around the beacon. A proper SLAM solution could involve anything from multiple beacons that the blimp could navigate to, to full optical navigation using something like the Centeye sensor.

We've also considered the Evolution Robotics Northstar system which is used on the Rovio, but it is built around the notion of projecting an IR spot on the ceiling and that doesn't work in big areas where the ceiling is high.

  • Oh, nice. Guess that SVT is more giving than I though. :)

For those that cant understand, they say that they are using a "robotic balloon computer", but they fail to get it working and use the RF control input instead. Later they attach a too heavy camera and the blimp fall to the ground, so they decide to build their own "sun balloon" using welded together black garbage bags. The objective? To find one of the guy's football - which ended up on the roof in the intro sequence.
  • ABM (ArduBlimpMega) maybe?

Sweet! The video plays fine in the US (but it's still in Swedish ;-))

It's a good reminder to me that we should start working on Blimpduino 2.0. I miss it!
