Does anyone have experience with these receivers regarding interchangeability between brands, eg Futaba c7 transmitter and cheep off brand receivers such as the RX 2405?

Just like Riccardo said. If I were you I'd get rid of the Futaba since it's basically 100$+ for a receiver.
I converted to an Assan 2.4GHz system which is much like the Spektrum DSM2 in technical terms. I.e. it transmits DSSS signal on two channels. Assan is module based so you'll have to buy a module based radio (like Turnigy/iMax 9X, for example). I had Futaba 2.4GHz earlier and now Assan 2.4GHz module + receiver combo and Turnigy 9X. Basically 8ch 2.4GHz radio with 2 receivers for under 150$ plus additional receivers don't cost fortunes.
2.4GHz are proprietary systems. Each brand has his own system that isn't compatible with other brands, unless it is declared to be (like Schulze with ACT S3D).
To be able to use a Walkera rx you have to transmit with a Walkera module, but I don't know if they exist for Futaba tx.
