3DR QUAD KIT Landing Legs Mods

Am building my FIRST MultiRotor UAV; a 3DR Quad Kit.  When I got around to installing the landing legs, I decided to make two mods:

I decided to move the legs as far out on their respective arms ( closer to the motors ) for added support since I will be adding "floats" for R.O.W. ( rise off water ) operations next year.  Any ideas to help waterproof my build for those times I use it for environmental water sampling would be appreciated.

The stock leg build looked a bit spindly so I got some premium model-builder's plywood and  filled in the space between the two carbon fiber supports that make up each leg.  Using one of the leg parts as a template, I drew then cut four plywood pieces drilling large enough holes in the wood to allow the stock stand-offs to be used.  Somehow, I think this will reduce leg breakage.  Tell me what you think after looking at the pix below

I have yet to mount my SPEKTRUM GEAR.  I have one of their DX-18 transmitters for link-up to my "bird".  I have yet to install one of their DATA LOGGERS  and  TM-1000 Telemetry Unit.  Am not sure if I should use my AR-9020 or  AR-9110 receiver.  A spot of help in deciding which to use would be appreciated.

Once my QUAD KIT has had a few shake-down flights to work the bugs out, I plan on adding a remote sensing spectrometer, some physics and chemistry sensors, and an array of aircraft recognition lights that are as close to FAA regs as possible.

QUESTION:  Since the only spot of colour in the 3DR logo is GREEN, why do they use BLUE as the differentiating color for the front end of the QUAD KIT ?
