4s Power distribution.

Hi guys.

I'm building a tarot ironman and proposing to use 4s battery. I've only used 3s before. Does this have any effect on the power distribution board? I am thinking of using a 12v/5v pdb to run power to 30a esc and to a gimbal plus led etc?

  • 4S for an Tarot ironman sounds a bit low, why not go for 6S ?

    With 4S your current would be too high, except you keep your AUW low and just want to hover around without payload (gimbal, camera...etc.).

    I'm not a friend of PCB power distributions, when it comes to big birds, the current is just too high. So you might get one of these:

    For current and voltage measurement you might consider this:

    • Hi Christian,

      Thank you for your reply.  I don't fully understand the relationship between the current of a 4s an the current of a 6s which is surely higher???  I am a newbie when it comes to the bigger set ups so am really just scaling up from my smaller rigs.  in terms of distributing the power from the battery to the escs, flight controller and receiver. and allowing for 12V and 5V requirements on the craft I don't know of an alternative system.  Any advice you can give me would be gratefully received.

      • Hi Tim,

        If you want to lift of any MR then you need a certain energy to do so. How many energy is depend on your AUW, efficiency of motor propeller combination... etc.

        So we just try to keep it short and say, all you need is enough "watt" to get off the ground. We just estimate, that you need 800W for hover (empty) and 1600W with payload (this is only a number for the following calculation):

        4S = 16.8V           800W / 16.8V = 47.6A            1600W / 16.8V = 95.2A

        6S = 25.2V           800W / 25.2V = 31.7A            1600W / 25.2V = 63.5A

        So the current with 6S would be only 2/3 of the current compared to a 4S setup. Furthermore, you can reduce the cable size and your power distribution board might survive !

        Anyhow, with such big bird you really might consider to go for the power module I mentioned in my first reply... it would be a save way to go.

  • PDBs usually handle 4s voltage, i think dont think voltage matters, the amps do....usually PDBs have amp current limitations...however if you saw something about 12v/5v that sounds like some built in voltage regulators for accessories...

    • Thanks Ivan,

      Its what I figured but I'd hate to see a puff of smoke when I fire up the £500 quad! I'm going to try single and twin 5200 4s 10c Multistars for flight time experiment.  Do you have any preference on ESC motor combination for a slow flyer camera platform?

      Its my first big quad after 250's and small hex so I want to get it right.
