I'm interested in trying out this, but I'm unsure whether it's legal to do this in my home country, Norway.I suspect that our legal rules are the same as for the EU, but I'm not sure. Does anyone here know what the rules are? What authority should I contact to get the information I need?
You need to be a member of diydrones to add comments!
As far as I know, there is no law or rule "in the EU", but there are national laws and regulations. They can be quite different among the countries. For instance, RC flying is allowed in Germany 1.5km away from inhabited areas, in Austria no such law exists.
In Germany and Austria, there is no law which explicitly handels UAVs. Instead, you would have to read all laws and find out if they have any concern to UAVs. Theoretically.
What I did: I asked the Austrian "Aeroclub" and they contacted "Austrocontrol" which is our local authority. The reply was: No problem as long as I adhere to the regulations which apply to RC flying. I.e. not higher than 150m above ground, not in the vicinity of airports etc.
I think this implicitly includes having a "pilot in command", i.e. a means of manually taking over by an RC transmitter. Which is the case. I do not intend to fly out of sight.
Another important question is if the liability insurance (which you should have for RC flying) also covers autonomous flight. In my case, it does (my insurance is provided by the Aeroclub).
So, I cannot answer your question. Norsk Aero Klubb sounds very good. I would not try to start without asking, as this could become expensive or worse.
Must be legal in Europe, there are some hobby uav builders (o.k. they are embedded electronics specialists and PhD's of military engineering) in Hungary, and nobody harasses them.
O.K. the legality depends on the classification of airspace (civilian, forbidden, military, NATO etc...), this determines the VFR and IFR (visual and instrumented) flight rules. I think you shold be informed from Scandicraft or Birdseyepics (or maybe the Norvegian airspace administration), they are probably more informed.

Will solve _all_ your worries here. :o)
Its possible to fly autonomous aircrafts in Norway but we dont have any set of
rules in Norway for UAS operations.
The existing BSL/rules of the air are still valid. You need to take contact with
the CAA (Luftfartstilsynet)in Norway.
They can give you a permission after an application. http://www.caa.no/
I will also recommend you to have a dialogue with UAS-Norway.
The organisation`s primary target is to contribute secure use of UAS operations
in Norway. http://uasnor.org/
