3.3 V to 2.5 V

I know a similar question has been asked, but I tried doing what it said and i ended up gettin smoke from a resistor. luckily i didn't hook up the sensor to it. i tried using a voltage divider using the method athttp://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/electric/voldiv.htmlit shows the circuit going from the positive end of the supply to the negative end. since there is no negative end, i grounded it. i think that's why it started smokin. how do i go about doin this correctly?btw, i need this for the ADXRS300 gyro sensor which requires a 2.5V reference voltage.
