Adding ultrasonic sensors to APM board?

Has anyone had any experience with integrating hobbyist ultrasonic (avoidance) sensors into the APM2.6/2.8 board?

These sensors are cheap and readily exsessable, seeing as the source code is open source these sensors could be relatively easily be added into the quad's code.

You can get these sensors from Alixpress for cheap, this really would be a useful upgrade who many who don't want to purchase the relatively expensive sonar sensors. https://www.tinydeal.com/HC-SR04-Ultrasonic-Distance-Measuring-Sensor-Module-for-Arduino-Works-with-Official-Arduino-Boards-Blue-p-112392.html?currency=NZD&ship_to=NZ&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIzM30gI7d1gIVjhZoCh2ztA6DEAQYAyABEgJVbfD_BwE

Even if you had to add an Arduino Micro to the quad, could you then feed in the processed distance (or PWM signal) into the sensor port on the APM?

Thanks, Henry.
