Advice needed to commence a UAV project

I have been following DIYDrones for quite a while and about to take the plunge. I have a good understanding of technology and it's application but to not have an understanding of electronics and the speak. I appreciate there are some incredibly talented people contributing their knowledge to the project, however the blogs and forums contain language that is far beyond my understanding. I am a commercial pilot and flight instructor and facinated with the potential of UAV's and their future application in life. What I am hoping to find is a very basic staring point that I can understand. On this site and associated links there are so many different references to APM 1, 1.4, 2 and 2.5, almost all still available for sale. Can I assume that 2.5 has replaced the model with the oil pan even though it is almost $100 cheaper. Does the 2.5 have the ability to connect sonar and air speed, telemetry etcI am going to start with a quad but somewhat confused what version of APM to purchase to start my experience.I would appreciate some advice please.Byron

  • In short, yes.  You want the 2.5 version.  It has the latest sensors, greatest flexibility and most compact design.
