Im a bit confused about altitude hold, its said you can do it with the barometer and not necessarily the gps. But how /what mode do you activate altitude hold to use barometer? Is it just gps hold but without gps it uses the barometer?

I believe the code has changed slightly since RC2 was released.
If you're using RC2, when you activate the autopilot, GPS hold and altitude hold are activated together. In fact, altitude hold will only come on while you have a GPS lock.
If you're using the latest trunk code from the arduCopter repository, the two are separated so whether or not you have a GPS, altitude hold will be activated. I'm not sure how it works with the official Pirates ArduCopterNG code.
