Antenna tracker??

I see a lot of discussion regarding antenna tracking and wonder why this is so common if you can buy a radio like the RDF 900 with a range of 20-30 miles? Seems like I'm missing a significant factor here?

  • Hi guys, don't mean to hijack this thread but you seem to know what's going on in the 3DR radio world.  With my stock 3DR radio set I am getting a range of 250-300m (LOS) on stock settings, 3DR advertises a range of about 1 mile (1.6km), I am trying to figure out if there is a problem with my radio or are 3DR's claims simply out to lunch.  Scott's comment that  "The guys at 3dR hated the fact they couldn't get across the field with their radios..." indicates to me that 250 -300m might be normal.  Please let me know what to really expect from the 3DR radios with stock antennas? Thanks

  • The RDF 900 is a awesome radio. I built a tracker for my video antenna that has a rather narrow focus. If I'm going to fly FPV greater distances I need a higher gain antenna. When I'm not flying FPV and just tuning I'll just use the RDF and power it back to about half the output power.
