Anti-vibration mounting of ACM/IMU

Hello,

following the discussions of vibration problems in the thread "Arducopter drift issues" and the helpful suggestions of JMD45, and others, I have implemented the 'silicone legs' solution for mounting the ACM/IMU, and thought I should post a few pics to show the result.

I have completely removed the top layer of the standard chassis, as there wasnt room underneath it, and I have mounted both the ACM and the radio on the same layer.

  • Here you can see the way I mount the APM board on my frame. I'm sure there is room for improvement, but so far this has worked well for me!

  • I changed my setup to the following:

    - APM and Oilpan are hardmounted (screwed) to the lower mounting square.

    - RC receiver and Xbee are mounted to the upper mounting square.

    - Standard standoffs between the two layers.

    - The bottom of this entire assembly is padded with foam and velcroed to the top of the frame.

Test flights after making this change show better flight characteristics and less drift.

I will try to take a picture of this setup and post it here.

  • Distributor

humm... you lost a tray for the RX / telemetry....

but assuming it works, that it indeed reduce vibration in a significant way, I think it will reduce the possibility of a "safe" crash... your APM can now fly away on impact and also has lost a protection layer from the above tray....

anyhow I understand that you've made this to test out the vibration hypothesis that lead to drift.

Still, there must be a better way to isolate the APM from most of the vibration without compromising the rest.

  • So APM is only held inplace with 3 silicone tubes?
