APM 2.0 wont power up from ESC's, only USB.

Last night I was configuring my new quadcopter and somewhat out of the blue the board wouldn't power up anymore.  The only thing I did wrong was have my plug from the receiver to Input 5 the wrong way but it still powered up while that was wrong.  It was a couple of times connecting the battery after that the board wouldn't power up anymore.  I've checked the voltage of the ESC's and they're all at 5 volts.  When powered by the ESC's I'm getting around 1.5 volts along all the power rails except the output where I get the usual 5 volts.  When powered by USB, I'm getting 5 volts on all the power rails.  Jumper 1 is connected.  Sorry if this question's been asked before but I couldn't find much on it for APM 2.0/2.5.

Thanks for any help.

  • The diode should be checked with no other wiring connected. This ensures (usually) there is no feedback from another path to skew your readings.

On the diode scale/setting, you should be reading ohms, not volts. If you have power to the system and connect the negative lead of the meter to ground, switched to volts, you should read about 0.7V DC difference (or so) from one side of the diode to the other. If you are reading several volts, the diode is not functioning properly and is bad.

Options are if the diode is bad:

    • replace diode with identical device
    • remove diode and replace it with a jumper (assuming no other wiring mistakes exist)
    • as you mention, jumper the rails together (I would remove the diode and JP1 to make sure it doesn't go toasty)

  • Sorry to hear of your trouble but as I tell my manager 'This is how people gain experience.'

If you are familiar with a schematic, HERE is a simplified power for APM2.0 and HERE is the one for APM2.5.x.

You may have damaged the diode in the upper left corner of the APM2.0 schematic.

If you pull JP1 you should be able to check D1 with the diode setting on your multimeter.
