Hi,
I just bought the apm2.5+ kit plus a mediatek gps. Minutes later I read that there seem to be a problem with having the compass onboard. I have two questions:
1) Is anyone using the onboard compass successfully (on a quad)?
2) Is it possible to use an external compass with the board that already have one "onboard" ?

Almost everyone uses the onboard compass (including me). There's no problem with the compass, you just need to mount your APM board out of the way of magnetic interference (ie, raised a few inches above your copter's PDB platform. If you do that, all will be well.
But if you want to use an off-board compass you can. Instructions are here.
