I have an old 3DR APM 2.5 that I lent to my nephew on an old quadcopter for him to learn on.

It's been working fine up until now when suddenly it will not connect to MP via USB nor via telemetry, the port is recognized as an "Arduino Mega 2560"

This seems to be a common problem more notably with the clone boards? What is the current thinking as to what has gone wrong? 32u2 chip fried?

Happened the same to me. Most likely the UART MUX is destroyed.

On my APM, also the UART on 32u2 died, but after replacement of the MUX, at least i can connect through telemetry port.
