Downloaded APM 2.1.2 unzipped, opened with Arduino 0022, clicked on verify - I haven't made any changes yet - all kinds of errors.

Have you set the sketch folder in Arduino Preferences as per the wiki?

listed under parameters.h

'AP_Int16' does not name a type

I believe this is what starts the string of many errors
