APM Connection Problem

Is there a good reason my APM wouldn't connect in Flight mode but does connect in Setup mode?

I am obedient in moving the mode switch as instructed by the prompt.

It always times out and gives the no heartbeat message.

Was loading a mission, ok, then tried to adjust parameters but won't connect.

Have done every permutation of power up/down, reset, etc, but no go.

Starts with the B and C LEDs on, then when click on Connect, B and C go off, TX blinks 4 times at 2 sec interval, skips one, repeats until times out, then board appears to reset (ABC pattern ending with BC on).

I can always go back to Terminal mode and connect with no problem.

Did an update in APM Planner, reuploaded APM V2.23, no change.

    Checking mode Switch:

    Pins:

    1 - Nearest DIP Sw

    2 - Center

    3 - Nearest edge of board

    Flight Mode (away from header)

    1: 4.9 v

    2: 4.9

    3: 0.5

    Setup Mode (toward header)

    1: 4.9 v

    2: 0.5

    3: 0.5

    Is this correct? Expected the center pin to be 4.9 v always and the other two to switch.

    Is there a readable schematic posted? (not the Eagle version)
