APM Robustness in a Crash

How fragile are the APM/Oil pan units? I ask because I'm eventually going to move up to this platform for a quadrotor. I had used all the boards to put together an AeroQuad in the past and after a couple of crashes, we found one of the boards was cracked and were out for a contest we were preparing for. I'm hoping that they are a little more resilient to crashes. I understand that hard crashes will damage just about anything but I'm curious how well they work when flying around.

Thanks!

Thanks for the replies! I will eventually get going on this project when I can find everything I need to get things together. It will sure beat having a coaxial heli or even a CP heli.

Well as from my own experience they are really rigid and can take some heavy punishing. I have been crashing a lot and really hard, some intentionally some not so intentionally while we have been creating ArduCopter frames. And I can say that I have never broke any of those but I have been breaking motors, props and other frame parts.

Sure if you allow them to get direct mechanical hit, most probably they will break but it will happen to all electronics. As long as you have even 1mm extra protection above electronics, you can crash really hard and not braking them.

  • as long as you secure the board (dome or something above the board), it will not break

i had some very hard crashes (hitting the ground from about 15m with fullspeed and upsite down) and I never broke the APM (just my 4 ESCs and a lot of Propellers and arms)
