I have two very small copper/black diodes instead of the single diode shown in the wikki
I guess I only need one of them. They have a black strip instead of the white strip mentioned in the wikki.
they look like zener diodes, am i right in thinking the black stip is positive and that I can use instead of the published diode?

Can you post a picture of the diodes and any part number that may be on the body of the diode?
The band on the diode usually identifies the cathode (-) end of the diode.
If you have a multimeter, you can use either the diode check function or the resistance function to determine what end of the diode is designated by the band.
Just a thought.
