I have a helicopter only Futaba radio. If I set the radio up as "H1" normal mode will the Arducopter work correctly? Or do I need to buy a radio that has airplane mode? Thanks.

Mode 1 vs mode 2 is just user preference, it swappable the left and right sticks, so as long as you learn to fly this way, it doesn't matter if it is mode 1 or 2.
But for a heli-only tx, you might have problems. This is because of the mixing. Can you disable control mixing so that you have at least four "clean"/unmixed channels?
What model of tx do you have?
