In otherwords if a newbie panicked as the quad veered away too much & couldn't bring back closer, can you just abort autotune altogether by flicking RTL?

Autotune turns off if you give any stick input so you can keep the copter in one area. Otherwise RTL should override it as you are changing the mode of the copter. You should watch the video on autotune as it describes the process and talks about how it works.
