I was wondering how important is it to place the IMU close to the CG of the airframe. I have been using an FMA CoPilot and I do not recall that there was much mention of placing the sensor near the CG. Any thoughts on this?

The defining equations that I use in my imu assume point mass, meaning that all of the dynamics happen at one central location. This is a great assumption around the CG so if you place the IMU at any other point you are inserting unmodeled dyamics. This is ok if you are at least close to the CG of the plane but obviously doesn't make sense to place the imu out on the wing. Plus or minus 5 inches is probably ok for most imu's.
