I like the ease of use of a Stamp or Picaxe but not their limitations. I first saw an add in Nuts and Volts for a board called EzSBC1 which is programmable in Basic and eventually gave it a try. Here are some photos and manuals http://ezsbc.com/index.php/products/ezsbc1.html . I am impressed. It is as easy to use as a Stamp but with real horsepower. For me the biggest plus is the ability to to floating point calculations with trigonometric functions for dead reckoning etc. The second big thing is that I can decode GPS strings easily with the built in string functions. An RTC, ADC and DAC are all built in, even four LEDS for basic signalling. I measured the peak current use at 60mA even with some LEDs flashing.
Have a look at the manuals, they are available for download.

I just saw that the price has dropped $10. Even better value now and I got a refund. :-)
