Yeah, I think the 4.8V is just too low. You need 5V.
What kind of craft is this going on? Do you have servos? If this is just a quad with no servos, 3A is way more than enough. A fully loaded APM with all the bells and whistles on draws about 0.2A. And that's with the receiver too.

Personally, I like the variable voltage one, at least you can change the supply if needs be.
Besides if you have alot of stuff running off a 4.8v supply, I think the voltage might drop low enough to cause brown outs...
