Building a Heavy-load Payload Copter

HI,

I have a request to build a copter which can handle 8Kg extra payload for a flight duration of 40 minutes.

The project is for the Local Search & Rescue Team to find the missing and lost people in the snow and mountains. The payload will be 2 ways radios, Blanket, Water, Food....until they reach them by car.

Your help is very important for us.

I found 3 frames which can be helpful but I want to know if it has been tested by someone:

As for the motors, I saw that the U8 is a good one and used by both companies.

I would like to have your help if you have any experience with that, or have other ideas.

There is no way you can fly 40 minutes (not even hover) with a multicopter carrying 8kg of payload. Use Xcoptercalc to simulate various configurations of motors, prop sizes, batteries, all-up weights and you'll see what flight times you can get.

    • Another good site is:

      Static Thrust Calculator
      http://personal.osi.hu/fuzesisz/strc_eng/

      And it's free!

I used it to calculate motors propellers ESCs and battery for my very large octocopter.
      With 6.5 kg and 2x 6S 5800mAh LiPo I get 20 minutes flying time.
I use 15" propellers with 5.5 pitch and have 320 kV motors.

Maybe UAV flying would help you solve your problem.

  • If you´re going to build it I´d recommend Tarot Iron Man 1000 Carbon Fiber Frame. It's very, very stable.
The 25 mm carbon fiber tubes and robust motor mounts will easily take the load you need.

The challenge will be selecting batteries, motors and propellers.

The stiff type of landing gear that Tarot has and the U8 above may easily break. As for any heavy flyer they must be quite elastic to survive a non perfect landing. I have created my own landing gear so I'm pleased for now.
