Does anyone have any suggestions on protecting camera gear slung under my quad copter? Is sturdy landing gear the best one can do?

I've considered making a more or less disposable pod out of blue foam, which is easy to carve, light, and very cheap. Aside from this (which I haven't yet seen anyone do), the only other option seems to be taller landing gear.
