Camera suggestions?

I am starting to do some research on cameras for my aerial rig. Right now I have been building up a 1000mm class size helicopter. The camera size isn't a huge issue but I don't want some mondo camera either. The point of this helicopter is for long flight duration so I can capture great video/photos.

I am asking the community for camera preferences. I am looking anywhere from a small GoPro all the way up to a larger size DSLR. What are your thoughts?

  • GH2, unless you need slowmo - in that case go for Nex.. :)

  • I love my earplugs; they did a great job in getting the jelly out of the video.

    Just watch the Sample Video

  • I got this Camera, and the first impression really good.

Good quality video and pictures, and streaming video out while recording or making pictures.

  • 1000!  Wow.

IMO, the GoPro class of camera is kind... junky for any kind of real use.  The ridiculous wide angle lenses just are not nice.

On the other hand, I think that carrying up a DSLR is a bit silly.  So much of the size and weight of the camera is due to the SLR mechanism that you aren't even going to be using.  They do have benefits in shallow field of focus.  That you won't be using.  They also have an advantage in ability to gather light.  Which you also probably won't be using.  You'll be flying mostly outdoors, in daylight right?

There are quite a number of extremely good compact cameras.  For example, starting at the Sony HX30V, through the RX100, and up to the NEX-5R.
